Heat-Seeking Nerf Vulcan Machine Gun Turret
9/3/2010 3:31:05 AM Sean Fallon Nerd Approved - Gadgets and Gizmos

We’ve seen several mods involving the Nerf Vulcan in the past, but this heat seeking version from Make Gadget Freak Design Contest award-winner Rick Prescott might be the most intimidating.

An idea sparked in my mind one day while walking the toy gun isle in a store with my kid and later that evening learning of the workings of a thermopile array while surfing the internet. The result is this infrared seeking sentinel which joins a realistically priced infrared sensor to a realistically operatable Nerf® machine gun to create a slightly less deadly yet still highly deterring automated machine. Personally I have grand plans to deploy the infrared seeking sentinel facing the entrance of my work cubical in order to speed interaction with less desirable visitors.

Nice.

This Robot Flash Drive Looks Familiar

This 4G robot USB drive kind of looks like C3-PO if he was captured and buffed to death. I’ll bet they just wanted to remove his mouth to shut him up.

This time-lapse video of the Earth was taken by Oregon State University alum and NASA astronaut Don Pettit during his time on the International Space Station.

Kinda makes the $20 million price tag to fly up as a tourist seem worth it. Watch the video on CubicleBot

Bookend Teleportation

These bookends were created by a guy with access to a CNC machine, but I’ll be dammed if he couldn’t sell a ton of them on Etsy.

I’m not sure how George Lucas and Disney’s lawyers will feel about all this, but artist James Hance has created some truly beautiful illustrations that mash up Winne the Pooh with Star Wars.

Drones Can Steal Your Beer

From That’s Nerdalicious!: Forget hunting down our nation’s enemies—drones have an even more devastating capability thanks to the Yale Aerial Manipulator.

Of course I’m talking about beer theft.

The drone uses a flexible robotic hand to grasp objects of about a pound in weight. Naturally, there are all kinds of practical applications for something like this as the technology improves—delivering supplie and handling bombs for instance…but what we are really interested in is retrieving a beer from the fridge with a helicopter. Now that would be something.

Check out the following link to see it in action.

This plush iMac has skipped right over mulitouch and gone straight for a huggable UI. That means less cuts and bruises from trying to hug your favorite Apple product.

Unfortunately, it’s also priced like an Apple product.
